First made by the Indigenous people of North America, maple syrup is older than Maine itself. However, until the 1800s, maple sugar was the main product from maple sap, due to the cost of sugar cane at the time. Today, the price of sugar has dropped and maple sugar and maple syrup have become specialty items.
